Description Hide Show Funkdoobiest – Brothas Doobie: A Distinctive Blend of Hip-Hop Grooves Released in 1995, “Brothas Doobie” is the second studio album by the Los Angeles-based hip-hop group Funkdoobiest, which was part of the same Soul Assassins family that included acts like Cypress Hill and House of Pain. Known for their playful, laid-back style and Latino influences, Funkdoobiest carved out their own niche in the hip-hop world with this release. “Brothas Doobie” stands out for its eclectic mix of funky beats, humorous and sometimes provocative lyrics, and the distinctive, gravelly voice of frontman Son Doobie. The album kicks off with “This Is It (Interlude),” setting the stage with its funky rhythm and setting the tone for the album’s diverse soundscapes. It’s a brief but effective introduction to Funkdoobiest’s world, where hip-hop meets funk in a vibrant and engaging way. “Rock On,” one of the album’s singles, showcases the group’s ability to blend catchy hooks with sharp lyrics. The track’s infectious beat and Son Doobie’s charismatic delivery make it a standout, capturing the essence of Funkdoobiest’s playful yet skillful approach to hip-hop. “Dedicated” is a smooth, jazzy track that highlights the group’s versatility. With its laid-back vibe and introspective lyrics, the song showcases a different side of Funkdoobiest, focusing on their musicality and depth of content. “XXX Funk,” as the title suggests, dives into more explicit territory, with the group’s trademark humor and wit on full display. The track’s funky groove and catchy chorus make it memorable, embodying the group’s penchant for blending fun and risqu topics with hip-hop beats. The production on “Brothas Doobie,” primarily handled by DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill and DJ Lethal of House of Pain, is top-notch, with a clear focus on creating deep, groovy beats that complement Son Doobie’s unique vocal style. The album’s sound is a testament to the Soul Assassins’ collective influence, with its seamless integration of hip-hop, funk, and Latino elements. “Brothas Doobie” is a celebration of Funkdoobiest’s unique place in the hip-hop landscape of the mid-’90s. The album captures the group’s infectious energy, humor, and musical diversity, making it a distinctive and enjoyable listen. In conclusion, “Brothas Doobie” by Funkdoobiest stands as a testament to the group’s ability to craft an album that’s both entertaining and musically rich. With its blend of fun, funk, and hip-hop, the album remains a notable entry in the genre, showcasing the creativity and charisma of Funkdoobiest. “Brothas Doobie” is not just a collection of tracks but a cohesive work that highlights the group’s talent and solidifies their legacy in hip-hop history.
