Snakes for the Divine is the sound of a seasoned metal trio melting faces at the top of their powers. Released in 2010, High on Fires fifth full-length begins with one of guitar hero Matt Pikes most lightning-fingered licks ever, with the galloping eight-minute epic likewise standing as one of the greatest speaker-blowers of the bands high-powered catalogue. Yet they also contrast feverish solo sections with cold-blooded riffage and slow slithering gloom (Bastard Samurai). Filled to the brim with sludge, stoner and thrash excess, their Snakes is a destructive yet divine must-hear for any metalhead.
