Mercyful Fates 1983 debut album was an inverted star-making turn that instantly established Hank Shermann and Michael Denner as guitar heroes (Metallica later incorporated four of its songs into a Garage, Inc. medley), while King Diamonds evil tales of graveyard desecrations made the face-painted, falsetto-voiced frontman one of the genres true icons.

Cross-referencing Seventies metal with a progressive edge and a taste for the extreme, Melissa is the sound of a Satanic motorcycle gang ape-hangering their way through all seven circles of hell. It remains one of the eras most daring thrill rides.
