Panteras 2000 swan song, Reinventing the Steel, stands as a favorite of both singer Philip Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown, boasting chest-thumping anthems like Revolution Is My Name and Goddamn Electric. Rather than kowtowing to the nu-metal sounds that eclipsed their power-groove in the metal zeitgeist, Pantera doubled down on their sheer force and pile-drove over the flavors of the month with some of the heaviest material in their catalog. It wasnt so much a reinvention but a reminder of their eternal dominance.

Panteras ninth and final album didnt tear up the barbarically groove-smashed blueprint the Texan titans drew up in the Nineties and for that were forever grateful. Dropped in 2000 during the height of nu-metal, the record instead reinforced the bands steel-eyed savagery, delivering 10 songs of imposing thrash (Hellbound), weed-and-whiskey-infused noise-blues (Goddamn Electric) and self-reverential sludge-metal singalongs (Ill Cast a Shadow).
