Following the acid-tab psychedelia of Pink Floyds Syd Barrett era and the orchestral bombast of 1970s Atom Heart Mother, 1971s Meddle found the English rockers continuing to expand their musical horizons through a series of diverging experiments. This includes dub-like bass drones (One of These Days), smooth-jazz noodlings (San Tropez) and music concrte field recordings of U.K. football fans and howling hounds. It closes with the pineal gland-piercing gloom-prog mastery of its nearly 24-minute title track. Not quite understated, though perhaps underrated against some of Pink Floyds biggest-selling albums, Meddle is a mind-bender from one of rocks most legendary acts.
