Though the Chilis first two albums showed punk-funk promise, its 1987s The Uplift Mofo Party Plan where the seeds of the Peppers sound truly blossom. Kicked off by the anthemically funky, full-tude Fight Like a Brave, this Party Plan is also bursting with tight-coiled, confident struts (Funky Crime) and psychedelic, slap-bass-and-sitar jams (Behind the Sun). Sadly, its likewise their last release with founding guitarist Hillel Slovak, who would pass on following a drug overdose the next year. His feverishly inspired playing is a big part of what uplifted the Peppers to the next level.
