After initially starting Strapping Young Lad as a solo project, mastermind vocalist-guitarist Devin Townsend recruited an all-star lineup drummer Gene Hoglan, guitarist Jed Simon and bassist Byron Stroud for the projects earth-scorching sophomore LP. Words like crushing and explosive fail to properly express the sheer force of tracks like All Hail the New Flesh and Detox, which fuse the mechanized beat of industrial with the skronkier side of pulverizing extreme-metal, creating a hulking cyborg of sound that’s at once brutal and oddly catchy.
