While much of the Swords recent material has shifted gears into more melodic hard-rock fare, their 2006 debut, Age of Winters, is one of the 21st centurys premier stoner-metal opuses. Songs like Freya and Winters Wolves feature monumental licks that singer/riff-crafter JD Cronise picked up from his studies in the school of Sabbath, but the record has a twinge of rip-roaring desert-rock flair that gives it its own unique vibe. This warm, fuzzy, hard-hitting album was made to be played on wax.
