After nu-metal and alt-metal snuffed out thrashs mainstream presence throughout the Nineties and early 2000s, bands like Trivium started bringing back fast riffs and acrobatic solos in the mid-aughts. Matt Heafy and Co.s second record, 2005s Ascendency, was a huge mile marker for that type of sound, merging the crushing breakdowns and big-room choruses of bands like Killswitch Engage with the thrashy rhythms and heroic guitarwork of, say, Ride the Lightning-era Metallica. Its one of Triviums heaviest albums. You gotta own it.
