In 1982, a fledgling label called Metal Blade Records launched their operation with a humble comp called Metal Massacre, highlighting unsigned metal acts who owner Brian Slagel thought deserved more shine. The names ranged from future hair-metal touchstones like Ratt and Malice to a quartet of fast-and-loud upstarts named Metallica, quickly putting Metal Blade on the map as one of the genres premier tastemakers. Today, it remains a crucial artifact of its era and a great piece of vinyl to own.
